WHAT IS THE MONSTER IN STRANGER THINGS?

In the famous Netflix TV show, Stranger Things, many creatures come from the upside down. As the seasons go by, the bestiary grows, taking us a little more into this fantastic universe of the 1980s, reminding us of the most terrifying creatures of the cinema such as Alien, the Predator or The Thing. Enough to make you shiver! Today we're reviewing the creatures from the series! Turn off the lights and shiver with us!

WHAT IS THE UPSIDE DOWN?

The upside down is a parallel spatial dimension coexisting with our own world. It is a dark and hostile copy of our universe. This dimension is also called Valley of Shadow by Dustin, Lucas and Mike, inspired by their game Dungeons & Dragons. The Underworld is dimly lit and entirely covered with slimy roots growing on its surface. The air is toxic and filled with cottony particles. The only known living entity is the Monster.

THE DEMOGORGON

WHO IS THE DEMOGORGON IN STRANGER THINGS

The Demogorgon is one of the main characters of season 1 of Stranger Things. The creature is named by the kids of Stranger Things in reference to their favorite game, Dungeons and Dragons. The Monster is a tall and skinny interdimensional being. It has no face as such. Its head has no eyes, nose or ears but opens like a flower with only a hole and teeth. Its feet and hands have sharp claws.

Every time he enters our world, he leaves a small tear or, one might say, a wound. This is what Joyce finds in her wall in Episode 4 and Nancy in the tree in Episode 5. These tears are somehow like open doors to the World in the Other Side. But they don't stay in place very long. Like wounds, they heal and eventually seal themselves.

WHAT ARE THE DEMOGORGON’S ABILITIES?

The Demogorgon possessed several unique abilities:

  • Strength: The Demogorgon was a creature of exceptional physical strength. It could break through solid walls and was capable of dominating and carrying a full-grown man.

  • Durability: With its durable skin and sturdy body, Demogorgon could withstand massive amounts of bullets from several firearms. However, it could not withstand Eleven's biokinetic power, which she used to dissolve and kill Demogorgon.

  • Detecting Blood: Demogorgon was strongly attracted to blood and could detect even small amounts of blood of various sizes.

  • Telekinesis: The Demogorgon seemed to have some form of telekinetic power. He unlocked the Byers' front door hatch while chasing Will. It is also possible that he used this power to attract the deer, and contributed to his physical strength despite a visible lack of muscle. However, this has not been fully clarified.

  • Interdimensional travel: The Demogorgon was able to move between dimensions.  It penetrated Hawkins several times, creating temporary tears in space-time.  The resulting portals looked like necrotic wounds.  He used this ability to lure individuals, such as Will Byers and Barbara Holland, into the Upside Down.

  • Regenerative Healing: After being trapped and set on fire, Demogorgon seemed to have healed most of its wounds after a short period of time.

WHO PLAYS THE DEMOGORGON IN STRANGER THINGS

The horrible creature of the Upside-Down World is not only shaped by computer, but also from latex flesh and mechanical bones.

The Actor Mark Steger, wearing a latex skin imagined and decorated by prosthesis designer Mike Elzade, embodies the upside down creature.

Basically, then, the monster of Stranger Things is simply a man in a suit. Mark Steger is also a regular of oversized disguises, since he had already played an infected man in I am a Legend and a four-legged alien in Men in Black II. Once the Spectral Motion teams have mounted this costume on him, they can move on to the digital and animatronic effects that make Demogorgon more alive than ever.

DEMODOG

WHAT IS A DEMODOG?

The Demodog is the same species as the Demogorgon but in a less evolved form. He is controlled by the Mind Flagellation but seems to have a consciousness of his own.

At the end of episode 2 of season 2, Dustin finds a baby demodog and makes him his pet until he eats his cat, Mew.

Later, when Steve and the children try to lure the demodogs so Hopper and Eleven can close the gate, Dart recognizes Dustin and lets them go in exchange for a few pieces of nougat.

DEMODOG EVOLUTION

  • Form 1: It looks like a small larva.
  • Form 2: Dustin will find it as a green, slimy tadpole with two legs and a tail. In this form, it appears to be not very aggressive and is sensitive to light and heat.
  • Form 3: Hind legs have developed inside him and protrude from his body. Now he evolves like a quadruped.
  • Form 4: After moulting, his skin has darkened and he has grown. Its head has evolved resembling that of the Demogorgon.
  • Form 5: This is the last moult before becoming a Demogorgon. It is bigger, bigger, stronger. Its limbs have lengthened and it now shows a predatory instinct that drives it to kill.

THE MIND FLAYER

WHAT IS A MIND FLAYER IN STRANGER THINGS?

Also called The Shadow Monster, this creature of the upside down appears for the first time in episode 1 of season 2 and is the main antagonist of this season. It seems to be only a thick, dark smoke. The Mind Flayer takes the form of a giant creature with many legs. It is reminiscent of a mixture of octopus and spider.

Children call him "The Mind Flayer" in comparison to the monster from the game Dungeons and Dragons who comes from another dimension and enslaves worlds and other dimensions by taking possession of the brains of their people with his hyper-developed psionic powers.

In Stranger Things, the Mind Flayer takes possession of Will, forcing him to join his army. An army composed mainly of Demodogs. He uses this ability to take control of minds to form a collective intelligence and memory. Unlike the Demogorgon, he is intelligent and acts in a thoughtful manner. To control a human or animal, the mind flayer must physically penetrate the body. No control is possible beforehand.

It also seems to be able to detect, to glimpse an individual located in a different dimension from its own. As it is the case when he observes Eleven at the end of episode 9 of season 2. Eleven delays him while Joyce and Hooper close the portal reopened the Russians

The Mind Flayer does not like sunlight and heat. It hates fire!

If the Mind Flayer infestation is to be removed from a person, that person must be exposed to a lot of heat. As a result, not only the Mind Flayer suffers, but also the human being.

SUMMARY

The first season of Stranger Things introduced us to the terrible demogorgon. New creatures followed with the arrival of seasons 2 and 3. If Mike's gang managed to push back the trans dimensional monsters, we already know that new creatures from the Reverse World will come to take their revenge in a fourth season.
